“Fools’ Chain” Banana Peels Installation of variable dimensions As one of the most widely eaten fruits, high in potassium, fiber, and vitamins, billions of bananas are consumed annually worldwide; yet banana plant farming, when not organic, is increasingly becoming a hot button issue with regards to monoculture plantations, sustainability, and ecological living.

“Skordofyla” Garlic Peels Installation of variable dimensions
Growing up in Athens and accustomed to a Mediterranean diet rich in garlic, fresh fish, therapeutic herbs, and olive oil, in “Skordofyla” I focus upon the differences between picking “mountain tea”, sage, and chamomile from the Greek mountainsides with my mother when I was growing up, to the ways we package and consume our foodstuff today. I invite the viewer to reflect upon our digital-age eating habits and consider the impact our changing world has on food production and consumption.

“Spiti” (Greek: Home) mixed media Installation Dimensions Variable
In 2010 I agreed to give my old house in Athens to a construction company that, as is customary in Greece, would give my family and I a well-equipped unit in the apartment building they would erect on site. As a Greek of the diaspora, who has been living away from the country for many decades, this house was my anchor, the refuge to which I returned to reconnect with the people I left behind, the link that maintained my bond to the place where I grew up. The house was demolished over twelve years ago. Due to the economic crisis and subsequent changes in the law, the contractor did not obtain the building permit to start construction, thereby turning a place once pulsating with life into a dirt pit that serves as a trash dump and urinal for stray cats and dogs.

Project “Spiti” documents the last few weeks of the house’s life. My goal is to stimulate discourse about the preservation and/or redefinition of personal and cultural identity, and address the questions: how do we relate to home and place in an era marked by mass migrations and economic collapse? How does the globalized environment impact the cultural landscape of countries like Greece? And, ultimately, how are our world’s changes affecting our sense of self and of belonging?
Marking the passage of time, each piece is created on my teabag left over after the day’s breakfast. The works are presented inside commercial plastic tags that serve as symbols of a fast-paced, homogenized era in which socioeconomic factors have deeply incised our world -- and thereby our sense of identity.

“Words: Trying to Come Out” Left: D, D /Mid: Uh, Uh /Right: Ou, Ou mixed media 7” x 8” x 5” each
“A friend who suffers from depression once said that communicating what’s inside is like trying to talk with a mouth full of thistles. As teaching on zoom for a couple of years was challenging, as I found myself forgetting the right words to use when speaking in English during the Covid isolation, and as anxiety and depression increased all around, I often reflect on my friend’s words.”
