Short Stories

Well-known Greek artist and writer Maria Karametou has won the Second Prize in the local Washington Metropolitan Area (DMV) Writers’ Short Story Competition. Her story entitled “The First Few American Moons” is published in the Bethesda Magazine’s July – August issue.

The awarded short story is an early draft excerpt from Karametou’s in-progress novel about a Greek immigrant to the U.S. and the young woman’s efforts to assimilate to her adopted homeland while confronted with the dichotomy of displacement and loss of belonging versus opportunity.

Professor Karametou’s many distinctions include Individual Artist Awards from the Maryland State Arts Council, the First Prize in the Maryland Biennial (Baltimore Museum of Art), and a Senior Fulbright Research Scholar Award from the Council for the International Exchange of Scholars for work in Istanbul, Turkey.
