People

“These mixed media pieces, made from cloth, handmade paper, wood, polymer clays, and other found objects, are meant to represent the inner identity of the individuals, or their “true identity”. … Karametou also creates portraits of anonymous faces she’s seen that have “left an imprint on (her) mind and stirred (her) imagination. These portraits evoke … iconic sculptures, a nod to the artist’s Greek heritage. The combination of invention and skillful rendering create unique interpretations of these people she has known and seen. Miniature scale makes each individual or couple precious in the individuality, treasured in their uniqueness…”

“Maria Karametou’s mixed media works combine the qualities of painting, sculpture and architecture. In an installation entitled “People” Karametou prodigiously explores the psychological aspects of the various people she comes in contact with, and symbolically presents them to the viewer as within a pantheon of vivid archetypes.”
